1. Acid Free

Paper or other materials that do not contain acids. Paper containing acid slowly discolours and becomes brittle. Acid free paper is treated with magnesium bicarbonate or calcium carbonate during production to neutralise the acids that are in wood pulp. For preserving a project for years always use paper that is acid free. It is identified by an infinity symbol.

2. Acrylic Paint

A synthetic paint that is water soluble when wet but dries to a tough and flexible finish. It is fast drying and easy to clean up when wet. Acrylic paint is water soluble and easy to mix to make different colours.

3. Appliqué

Decoration made by applying pieces of cut fabric applied to a base fabric usually in needlework.

4. Archival

Ability of paper and other materials to retain their properties over time. For photographs this refers to the ability to retain the colour or, for black and white photographs, the 'blackness'. Anything referred to as archival should be made with 'acid free' materials.

5. Batik

Decorative technique made by covering fabric in patterns of wax, dyeing the fabric then removing the was to leave a pattern of undyed fabric.

6. Brayer

A small roller operated by hand, usually for spreading ink. Brayers may be made of acrylic, sponge or rubber and can be used for spreading ink directly onto a surface or onto a stamp. Brayers are also used to remove wrinkles or excess glue in decoupage.

7. Butcher Paper

Thick, sturdy paper originally used by butchers for wrapping meat this paper is used posters, murals etc.

8. Card Stock

Sturdy, thick paper in various weights used in scrapbooking and other paper crafts. having the thickness of index cards it comes in many textures and colours.

9. Chalk

Calcium carbonate shaped like a crayon, in various colours, that can be used to draw on blackboards or other smooth surfaces. Used to draw pictures on pavements or on paper. A fixative must be used on paper to prevent the chalk from smudging.

10. Charcoal

Pencil made from the black substance obtained by heating wood in the absence of oxygen. It is a soft, brittle, porous material resembling coal and is composed of 85% to 95% carbon.
